What are stem cells?
Our bodies have the remarkable ability to regenerate and replace lost cells, such as skin and blood, to maintain tissues that are short-lived and continuously replenished. Cells that enable this regeneration are called “stem cells.” For a cell to be considered a stem cell, it must have two key abilities: the ability to create various body cells (such as skin, red blood cells, and platelets) through differentiation, and the ability to replicate itself (self-renewal).
There are two main types of stem cells. One type, known as “tissue stem cells,” replaces lost cells in specific tissues and organs, like skin and blood. These cells serve specialized roles; for instance, hematopoietic stem cells produce blood cells, and neural stem cells generate cells for the nervous system.
The second type is “pluripotent stem cells,” such as embryonic stem (ES) cells, which can produce any type of cell in the body. Pluripotent stem cells can also give rise to different tissue stem cells within our body. Induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, for example, are pluripotent cells that are artificially created from regular cells.
By harnessing the unique properties of stem cells, research in “regenerative medicine” aims to use cells themselves as treatment, helping repair injuries and combat diseases. Studies are ongoing to recreate cellular states outside the body to better understand disease mechanisms and develop new therapies.
