Therapeutic Effects of Hyperbaric Oxygen: Integrated Review
Therapeutic effects of hyperbaric oxygen: integrated review
Suman Sen1, *, Sheuli Sen2
This study is an integrated review on the therapeutic effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT).
HBOT involves inhaling 100% oxygen in a pressurized chamber, with oxygen pressure 1.5–3 times higher than normal atmospheric pressure. It is used to treat various pathological conditions, including decompression sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning, osteomyelitis, osteoradionecrosis, wound healing, and more.
Key Points:
- Mechanism: HBOT increases oxygen delivery to tissues, correcting hypoxia, reducing oxidative stress, promoting angiogenesis, and enhancing antimicrobial activity. It also improves tissue healing and reduces inflammation.
- Therapeutic Indications: HBOT is effective for conditions such as refractory osteomyelitis, gas gangrene, cyanide poisoning, decompression sickness, delayed wound healing, diabetic ulcers, radiation-induced injuries, and brain trauma.
- Contraindications: HBOT is not recommended for individuals with lung conditions, ear injuries, upper respiratory infections, pregnancy, pneumothorax, uncontrolled hypothermia, or claustrophobia.
- Side Effects and Complications: Common side effects include headache, fatigue, nausea, and claustrophobia. Severe complications may include lung damage, ear barotrauma, sinus issues, vision changes, seizures, and fluid accumulation in the lungs.
- Preconditioning: HBOT preconditioning can prevent complications in diving, ischemic, and inflammatory conditions by activating antioxidative enzymes and reducing inflammation.
- Clinical Applications: HBOT aids in wound healing, skin graft survival, and treating brain stroke by promoting angiogenesis, collagen production, and reducing inflammatory cytokines.
The review concludes that HBOT has significant therapeutic potential, but long-term studies are needed to evaluate its clinical efficacy and cost-effectiveness.
